This week, October 18 – 24, is National Bird Wee

This week, October 18 – 24, is National Bird Week. A week to inspire all Australians to take action and get involved in bird conservation – even from your own backyard. 💕
We’re kicking it off by showcasing one our favourite birds Jezzabelle, the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo 💕
Here in the Northern Rivers we are home to a Coastal Sub-Species of Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo. Unfortunately due to the high demand to live in this area, deforestation and not having enough nesting hallows has lead the sub-species to become critically endangered in the Northern Rivers. A count showed that there’s less than 10 pairs left.
Some things you can do to help the Red-Tails and majority of our other native bird species is by putting up nesting boxes in native trees around your home and property and advocating for keeping our native rainforests.
Come and see Jezzabelle and more of our wonderful birds at The Castle with our incredible bird show at 12:15pm daily.
Our dedicated keepers will inform you about how your actions can help prevent a species becoming endangered, or worst become extinct. 🦅🏰💕

Night tours are back with a SPOOKY twist for Hallo

Night tours are back with a SPOOKY twist for Halloween!
Explore the castle grounds by moonlight. Get up close with a variety of incredible animals which may include wombats, koalas, tawny frogmouth, sugar gliders, short-eared possums and nocturnal pythons.
Enjoy a sausage sizzle with crusty rolls and home-made chutney. Venture into the bushland with our experienced keepers, learn the art of spotlighting and observe the local native wildlife in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes peeled for some spooky surprises! Then finish the evening with a bush campfire, roasting marshmallows, and sipping Macadamia Liqueur.

Following their acquisition of the Macadamia Castle site, the Byron Wildlife Hospital is now making their first strides in combining the two organisations.
Having been confined to the mobile hospital named Matilda for the first year of its life, the hospital will now be able to keep wildlife patients and develop their space in Knockrow to provide more space to rehabilitate them.
While the site currently plays host to farm as well as native animals, the hospital’s founder and CEO Stephen Van Mil, says their focus will be on the
natives.
Currently in the hospital’s care is a yellow-tailed black cockatoo, called Lemonade, who is unable to return to the wild owing to her injury.
While before the hospital would have needed to find a carer for her, Mr van Mil says that she can now serve as an education animal, so the public can see more closely the result of human impact.
To host more animals like Lemonade (including much larger ones), the site will also be expanding, with a large area at the back of the property to be cleared before becoming a new enclosure.
To help manage the new animals, Stephen also says that “The wildlife keepers are pretty excited about having a wildlife hospital… They’re getting directly involved in the system with cases”.
In addition to their usual duties to the current residents, the keepers are also now helping to care for animals that come in through the hospital and other care groups.
